When you think of Thanksgiving dinner, you probably think of turkey and dressing, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. But what you see on your table and what the Pilgrims actually served is actually very different. They wouldn’t have had sweet potatoes or cranberry sauce – potatoes hadn’t made their way to North America yet, and boiling and sweetening cranberries wouldn’t be a thing until almost 50 years later. So, what did they have instead? Turkey was probably on the menu – we don’t have a specific mention of it, but we know the colonists hunted wild turkeys and it was already considered a gourmet food back in England. They also served, goose, duck, fish, lobster and mussels and their Native American guests brought venison. For sides, they had boiled or roasted squash and cornbread. Unfortunately for them, pumpkin pie is also a later invention, but the Pilgrims might have had stewed pumpkin or pumpkin bread. Regardless of what our ancestors ate, they got together for the same reasons we do today – giving thanks for all the wonderful things we enjoy. And enjoying a great meal is a time-honored way to celebrate holidays. So whatever is on your menu, have a happy Thanksgiving. |
